Paul Calamari

Paul Calamari

Ordained: 1980

In 2018, the Archdiocese of New Orleans named Calamari as credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor.  In 1997, he left the New Orleans area for treatment at a Pennsylvania psychiatric center for priests and other church ministers.  In 2003, he was removed from active ministry following allegations of sexual abuse occurring in the 1970s.

In 2019, a civil lawsuit was filed accusing Calamari of sexual abuse while he worked at St. Raphael.  Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that in the 1980s Calamari would request sleepovers with the victim, an altar boy, at the Calamari family’s summer home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  On these occasions, Calamari allegedly wrestled with the child, leading to genital fondling and groping.
